TIFFIN, Ohio - The Bluffton Beavers traveled east to Tiffin to face off against the Heidelberg University Student Princes. Despite the Beavers having chances offensively, they struggled to find the back of the net as Heidelberg would defend its home turf and down the Beavers 2-1. Bluffton now sits at 2-5-1 on the season as they enter conference play, while the Student Princes improved to 2-6 overall.
Senior Alex Brown (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) made Bluffton history on Sunday, becoming only the 7th Beaver to eclipse 5000 minutes in the win over Wabash, before moving up to 5th all-time while playing Heidelberg.
The Student Princes would get the scoring rolling in the first period, just 10 minutes into the contest, sneaking a shot low past Beaver goalie Zach Johnson (Middletown) while putting the home team up 1-0. They wouldn't be finished as they added another goal in the 28th minute, extending their lead to 2-0 going into the half.
The Beavers got the gears churning in the second half with an 11-3 advantage in total shots, finally getting a goal on the board with Collin Scheid (Lima/Shawnee) scoring off a penalty kick in the 54th minute. Despite improvement on offense in the second half, it wouldn't be enough as they were unable to find the tying goal, falling to the Student Princes 2-1.
While Bluffton was narrowly outshot, 15-14, Heidelberg had an 8-2 advantage on frame in the contest. Two Beavers fired a shot on goal, with Collin Scheid and William Clark (Mount Blanchard/Riverdale) each tallying one apiece. Clark finished with three total shots in the contest. Jaden Ngufor (London, Ont. Canada/FC London) would also have three shots in the game, with Alex Brown recording two shots.
Bluffton will look to rebound from this defeat as they prepare to get their conference schedule started, traveling to Transylvania on Saturday, Sept. 27, with a 3:30 start time.
